Neo-Nazis don’t like to stray too far from the source material, this goes for both their ideology and their iconography. So it should be no surprise that they adopted the SS Bolts used by the Schutzstaffel (SS) of the Nazi Party and make use of it within their groups. Led by Heinrich Himmler, the SS were responsible for maintaining the police state of Nazi Germany, acted as elite soldiers in the army, and guarded the concentration camps. Much like a lot of Nazi iconography the SS bolts were derived from an ancient runic alphabet, something we here at SARFAN plan on delving further into at another time. As white supremacist and Neo-Nazis movements grew and adopted Nazi symbols, the use of the SS bolts began to rise. Like other hate symbols, you see them used as tattoos, badges and emblems on their clothing, and used to deface property to spread their hateful message. Seeing and recognizing these symbols will continue to help us remain vigilant and report any usage to the proper authorities, and hopefully our anti-hate movement will start making a difference to combat these terrible groups.

This fact continues to be important when you realize that these hate groups are being supported by nations and other institutions of power. People with these hateful ideologies are being trained and put into groups, equipped with military equipment and sent to fight in foreign lands to help achieve foreign policy goals. Russian is a frequently implicated in acts like these and has been caught red-handed using various Neo-Nazi groups to build up their mercenary armies that they send overseas. Groups like Wagner in Libya can be seen fighting for Russia and while spreading their message of hate, leaving behind Neo-Nazi graffiti all over towns they’ve destroyed. Someone has to hold them accountable and we hope we can start that conversation and make a difference.

A Vile Tragedy

On May 2, 2014, anti-Maidan (pro-Russia) activists attacked a pro-unity (pro-Ukraine) march in the center of Odessa. The pro-Russia activists carried large amounts of Molotov cocktails into the Trade Union building. Both sides hurled Molotov cocktails at each other and eventually the Trade Union building burned down, which resulted in a fire that killed 42 people.

A Russian loyalist, Oleg Muzyka, was arrested in the Trade Union building after the fire and claims the fire was initiated by Neo-Nazi Fascists with U.S. support. Since then Muzyka has traveled throughout Europe to promote this conspiracy theory, which has gathered a huge following. Muzyka fled to Germany in the summer of 2014. Before that, shortly after the Maidan revolution, he had tried to erect “Novorossiya” (the imperial-era name for Eastern Ukraine) to further expand Moscow’s control of the region. The attempt failed despite massive help from Russian intelligence – and Ukrainian nationalists almost killed Muzyka. He has sought asylum in Germany, but during his time in Germany, we have begun to notice his true identity.

Faux NGO

“Global Rights of Peaceful People” (GROPP) was founded by Muzyka and his colleagues in 2015. The goal of the organization is to “destroy the information blockade of the Western media on the situation in Ukraine”. To this end, the organization holds vigils against the “neo-fascist” government in Kiev, participates in demonstrations against NATO, and publishes political contributions on YouTube. GROPP also organizes conferences to transport the political message. The NGO maintains close contract with Kremlin-affiliated groups such as the “Night Wolves” and allegedly Kremlin-owned organs.

Suspicious Social Networks

Muzyka’s group-lists on his odnoklassniki.ru profiles are illustrative of his strong pro-Russia tendencies and include groups such as “Putin’s Friends Club” and “Putin’s Team Online”. He also follows numerous official Russia media outlets, including official Kremlin news and Twitter feeds. Of note as a possible window into the specific Russian parties with which he sympathizes, Muzyka follows the Twitter feeds of both former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Vladimir Zhirinovsky, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia – a group which is socially conservative, nationalist, economically interventionist, and tends to vote in line with the ruling Russian party. Muzyka also follows Gennady Zyuganov, head of Russia’s Communist Party. Zyuganov adheres to the same anti-homosexual, anti-Western liberalism, intense Russian nationalist agenda that seem to be common themes in Muzyka’s social media followings.

Muzyka’s Instagram account includes videos and pictures from a June 2019 event in Moscow and an August 2017 event in Germany involving the violent, anti-LGBT, misogynist, Russian nationalist motorcycle gang we mentioned earlier, the “Night Wolves”, widely believed to be a Russian government-proxy group. The account also includes video from an August 17, 2017 anti-NATO protest in Berlin, as well as a photo of Muzyka speaking at a likely Russian Orthodox Church event.

Like-minded Contacts

Muzyka also has close contacts to the Reichsbürger movement, which is notoriously xenophobic and anti-Muslim and believes that the U.S. occupies and controls. In particular, Muzyka is associated with Carsten Halffter, who is involved in the Reichsbürger movement and known for organizating anti-Semetic demonstrations. The content of Halffter’s Twitter account (@papa_carschten) includes themes that are consistent with querfront ideology (anti-Western leftist views) and includes content similar to Russian amplification channels (supportive of friendship with Russia, stories on the Night Wolves, RT content). The Reichsbürger movement includes a variety of ideologies, ranging from general paranoid conspiracy theories to hard-right radicalism. Therefore, Muzyka’s affiliation with adherents of this ideology does not necessarily imply hard-right neo-Nazi views but is consistent with Russian messages.

How can someone speak so badly about others, while fully supporting Neo-Nazi ideology? Furthermore, how can Germany help Muzyka and provide him asylum status when he harkens to the dark past of Germany, propagating ideologies that Adolf Hitler once spoke of? Please share this information so people can learn about Muzyka’s actions, and maybe he’ll get sent back to Ukraine and be held accountable for his actions in 2014.

You would be hard pressed to identify a stronger symbol of hate in the modern world than the swastika. While originally a benign symbol, it was adopted and eventually corrupted into a symbol of hate by the Nazi party as they used it to spread their hateful ideology. Neo-nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups continue to rally around this swastika as they spread their message of intolerance and fear to others. The swastika can be see on their clothing, tattooed on their bodies, and while they think this makes them stronger and fearsome, it helps us readily identify them and allows us to do something about it. Seeing and reporting these groups is a step each of us can take to slowly combat their hate.

It’s important that we see and recognize these symbols to not only stop the groups themselves, but those who enable them. You can see the swastika used by Russian lackey’s overseas as they fight wars on Russia’s behalf. Russia denies their support of these troops but they are obvious pawns in Russia’s game of foreign policy. In that role, these hate groups are mobilized and equipped to wage war, fueling their aggression. As they trample through countries, they spread their message of hate through graffiti and destruction. Again, it is important we highlight these events so that someone in power can finally decide to do something about this. If we don’t speak up now and people stand by doing nothing, these hate groups will be further emboldened and continue to commit increasingly violent and despicable acts.

We here at SARFAN continue to advocate against the spread of hateful ideology in any shape or form, but especially when its sponsored by a nation with no repercussions for their actions. Throughout the rise of the Nazi party, their terrible rhetoric was symbolized through their hateful iconography. Their ideas, motives, and actions are still remembered today and those symbols continue to remind people of their crimes. However, those who identify with the Nazis and idolize their actions take pride in these symbols and the fear they cause, and use them freely to spread their message to compatriots who share in their ideologies. These groups rally around these symbols of hate and promote the ideas they represent, seeking to spread a new wave of fascism and racial purification, while also promoting violence as a means to impose their will upon others.

You can find these insidious groups all over Europe these days, but what is more worrisome is the militarization of such groups. These groups can be openly seen within Russia’s paramilitary organizations that are spread all over the world. Russia tries to distance themselves from these Private Military Companies, but it’s a well-known fact that each group has ties to the Russian government as well as the Kremlin. The more egregious issue is that Russia allows these groups to be comprised of radical ideologues who promote their hateful message wherever they go. You can see symbols of hate within every Russian PMC from the symbols on their uniforms to the tattoos on their bodies along with buildings spray painted with these symbols in the lands they occupy and cause violence in.

With continued inaction by governing bodies, it’s up to us to hold these groups accountable. If we see these symbols of hate, we must report them. We must gather the evidence and make it clear that these groups are not only spreading their hateful message, but that they are being endorsed and funded by Russia to achieve their goals. A new wave of militarized fascism made up of neo-Nazis is a very real threat that could come sooner than we expect, and it’s our duty to ensure the warning signs are seen and heard by people with the power to do something about it.
